Images and photos are almost the exact opposites of each other: what the one does well, the other doesn’t – and the strengths contain the inescapable weaknesses. Together they can do a fine job of covering all the bases in representing reality and portraying a message. Images are easy to access and show an objective slice of reality that no words can represent as well, but only words can explain context and make a larger and more general argument. “The shock of photos, the weight of words,” Life magazine advertised itself. That is indeed so.
